You can look for Acer laptops. They are a bit cheaper and come with good configuration.

I've never not had a Dell self-desctruct on me in a spectacular way.

And, living where I do, I'm surrounded by people who work or worked for Dell. Not a company I would support.

Recent problem faced by my friends and mates these days on their laptops- Windows 7 comes as pre-installed in that but you can not install windows Xp.
Windows Xp is not compatible with Core i3 ,i5(Latest Stuff) specially in case of Dell,HP,Lenovo.
Now don't ask me who uses Windows Xp these days, because am using it.

Windows 7 does not suck nearly as much as Vista did. Windows XP has its own set of problems. For me, IMHO, etc. if you insist on running a version of Windows, you should be running Windows 7.

I used to buy a lot of DELL computers, several hundred. In the early 2000's, Dell's reliability fell apart. I stopped buying them, stopped recommending them. I've heard that they are less crappy, but I don't know that from personal experience. I would not bet my company on Dell.

There are only a handful of companies that actually design and make laptops. All the rest of the "brands" are just stickers put on commodity boxes.

No issues with Windows 7- Its running fine on my netbook.
I have seen people using Dell laptops at my place of work- Dell Latitude series. But I personally use Acer at home and its kind of fine considering that its been used extensively over the past 4 years. Lot of my freinds bought Acer laptops and havent found any issues with it. There were a few issues with people using HP/Compaq laptops.
People say Toshiba latops are also good.

Agree, the price qouted is way to higher for the given configuration. Sony Vaio products are costlier than other brands. I havent seen a wide usage of Vaio laptops either.

so you can see which one is better....

I like sony so i say,its your choice whatever you want cheap or best..
Check outthis

I like sony as using it from last 1.5 year.

My brother is using dell it heats easily but my sony laptop is never heated up.

If you keep it on for 5hours also then i have not seen much heat coming out of it.

And also dell life is very less, withiin a year your laptop will demand maintainence which i have seen with many of my friends..
Lenove is very bad, many of many friends in college life is having a bad experience with that.

So,i choose sony vaio EB14 while purchasing.

With usage the cooling system needs attention- may be due to dust accumulated or the fan's performance reduces. Agree that heating is an issue which is seen in many brands but one can use external cooling system.

Which brand is "best" is a matter of opinion rather than fact, or based on personal anecdotes ("Dell is crap because my Dell laptop broke", "Sony is great because my Sony laptop never gets hot", etc.), as you can see in the reactions above.

Well, you get an idea of what one or a few random persons think of brand X or Y, but it is ofcourse not evidence that brand X is really crap and brand Y is really great - I'm sure that if you ask somebody else you can easily get exactly the opposite opinions. If you really want to get an idea you'd have to ask thousands of people instead of just one or two...

As a former employee of Gateway computers. I learned that the HP, Dell and Gateway laptops are literally the exact same laptop. All of them built by the same Chinese company. And I know the Gateway laptops were complete trash. So what does that say about HP and Dell?

So i Think as per above comments,
Its totally depends what is good or bad when you purchase a laptop and you have a experiance from it.

Bad experience of peoples from same company with more then once doesnot matter.
Good will of same brands will not matter.

When people goes to purchase anything they have to do some study about some brands,as there is so many brands available in the market.
Its not possible that one has decided to purchase a laptop and he will go by close eyes and pick any laptop from any of the available choices.

Strange Chinese develop parts for US companies.. I thought they are independent and I am not going with lenovo and acer because they are chinese and taiwan respectively. OMG But they are every where....Better if i go for SONY or Toshiba ...I can trust on Japenese quality..

You can't tell that. Some good brands product may come with a manufacturing defect which might show up after a month or so of usage. You can always claim a replacement for the damaged part within the warranty(provided the warranty conditions are satisfied).
You look for the configuration of your choice and the price range you have decided- You will end with 2 or 3 models to choose from. Dont start to narrow down on the brand now itself.

I am asking in case of hardware configuration. Are sony laptops really good than Dell if we compare same configuration?
Why sony laptops are high priced than Dell laptops for the same configuration ?
