Ok, so I suspect I've broken off quite a bit more than I can chew here. In fact, it may be mroe than I can comfortably consume in a meal.

I'm pretty new to Java.

They have me developing an app, largely in JSP, to manage some communication. Part of this is displaying contents based on who the user is. So that means gathering information from the Active Directory. Fortunately, I don't need to look anyone up other than the actual user.

Basically, I want the Java to identify the user, grab the name of their department and manager from AD, and display it.

Can you point me to a place that most effectively teaches me how to do this? Have I oversimplified it? Is this more challenging than even I think it will be?

Agreed. I did this a few years ago, and it was annoying to get working correctly.

You have to use the JDNI interface, which you have to configured for AD. Back then, it was annoying as heck, as it didn't seem to work consistently -- it actually did work, but what should be simple changes, wasn't.
