The term "sandbox" usually refers to a controlled and bounded environment.

Term "develoer sandbox" is also used for development environments which can be used by developers to play around.
Its a casual setup simulating the live environment where bugs / defects in any are not taken seriously.

For example, I have a seperate workplace in Eclipse called 'sandbox' in which I play / test / investigate / explore technologies or libraries that I'm not familiar with (or that I need to re-kindle with). The clutter of several projects with several warnings and even error messages thrown by them, combined with additional user libraries, or maybe Eclipse plugins and so on, doesn't matter because the 'normal' environment in which I work on the 'real' projects is in a seperate, clean workspace.

The term can be widened to include systems (servers) and even networks, in which can freely be tested without the risk of contaminating or otherwise influencing the parts in your technology that you want to protect from such risks.

Cheers,
Wim

In the Java field the term has a more specific meaning as well: the restrictions that apply to applets. The security manager that enforces the applet sandbox is also used in other contexts, like for web apps executing in shared servlet containers.
