I have a Java, Servlet, and JSP instant message application where members send instant messages to each other, the issue is when a memeber closes his instant message window, another member thinks he is still online untill his sesion expires 30 minutes later.

Thanks,
Alex

How can the other user be notified that his buddy left the chat session, so he does not get frustrated sending instant messages with no one getting them?

All you can detect is if the page unloads.

Your session timeout doesn't have to be half an hour. You can set a really short session timeout (couple of seconds) and make a timed ajax request in your page. Not saying that's the best idea, but you could.
