I work with several programmers who currently code COBOL and have been for most of their careers. Many are now having or wanting to switch to Java. What would you recommend for them to start out with? Any best approaches/tricks to the change in thinking procedurally to object-oriented?

I went down that road. "Thinking in Java" is probably a good choice.

Me 2 after 12 years of COBOL...
I recommend to start with Head First Java, who's got a really nice example in the first chapter about the differences between procedural and oo programming.
After that, reading Thinking In Java was more easily to digest.

Good luck,
D.
