FaceBook has a massive mind share and I don't think any one can take it from them in the near future.
On a side note: Google shouldn't allow their programmers to pick products names. I mean "Google+"? really?
John Todd wrote:Do Google Wave and Buzz ring a bell? Do I dare to include Go language?
I don't think this is fair. Wave and Buzz were huge, expensive failures. So far, I'm impressed with GO. Its not aimed at being a huge OO language to solve all known problems in Computer Science and Software Engineering, so I don't consider that it fails to solve said problems to be an issue.
Next time I have free reign to pick a language, I probably will try GO.
Saurabh Pillai wrote:but Google has earned the reputation, right?
Not really. They've had many more failures than they've had successes. That's not a bad thing -- I give them a lot of credit for trying lots of stuff and not being afraid to fail at something. But to assume that something that comes from Google is automatically great is not supported by history.
Bear Bibeault wrote:But to assume that something that comes from Google is automatically great is not supported by history.
I think you can be much stronger than that. If you take at random a released product from Google, you will pick a product that failed. Google has two products that make money (search and YouTube) and a small number of products that are in widespread usage (gmail, calendar) but are not close to leading the market. Even in search, Google has only about 70% of the world-wide share, which is much, much smaller than the Windows market share at Microsoft's peak.
Google has tons of money, and tons of really smart engineers. From feedback of the blessed who can actually use Google+, its good. Their track record at releasing products is actually quite poor.
The timeline of posts on my Google+ page is not clear- the post which was posted last year and if someone leaves a comment today then it suddenly shows up on the top of the list as the latest- So when I come back- I see - oh! what's happening with my timeline and when this happens for lots of previous post you really dont know what's Latest!
though I dont play any of the facebook games or apps I think that was something which got people to hang around on their site trying out different games/apps. Facebook missed closely monitoring the apps released by other developers and thereby led to lost of spam and what not. But I think they are monitoring it now. Facebook evolved and they evolved a lot faster.
Things might change, but as long as there's some way of getting to know whats happening among my friends or whats happening around I dont mind using that- be it Facebook, G+ or what ever.
Lots of them are excited with G+ claiming they have better privacy options, I think even Facebook has. And you just dont indulge in using fake/spam applications on Facebook and you are good to go. Most of the features in G+ are just slightly modified and named differently.
I could be wrong, but even though Google has become a house-hold name, I can't see my cousins and other non-tech family members flocking to Google+ anytime soon, or even anytime at all. My prediction* is that Google+ can, at best, become Facebook For Geeks.
* Take my predictions with a grain of salt. I also predicted that the iPhone would never catch on.
I use gmail, google docs, google groups and google reader. That's too much info for them to leak out.
I'm on Facebook, but I only use it a bit. In other words, if someone writes on my wall, I'll poke around and see if anyone posted something interesting that day.
Jeanne Boyarsky wrote:Right. But if I have to create a public profile, doesn't that reintroduce the original problem. The one I deleted my public profile to "fix"?
I think, repeat think, that they actually fixed that. I'm pretty sure it was part of the bugfarm that was called Buzz. They got in huge trouble with that, including a Federal investigation.
Of course, I don't know of any way to actually be sure.
I've got a very basic Google profile, and nearly everyone in my contacts list are kinfolks. My kinfolks would not be shy about telling me if they were getting spammed because of me.
And Google+ is still brand new, so not as many people, companies and other groups are on Google+ yet.
I'm not a big fan of Facebook, I just don't see why it's so interesting. 99% of what people put on Facebook is uninteresting nonsense, I wouldn't miss anything if I didn't read it. From what I've seen so far, Google+ doesn't seem to have anything that makes it a lot more interesting than Facebook.
But there are two fundamental differences between FaceBook and Google+
1) Google makes token efforts to provide privacy controls, and has policies that they won't make arbitrary changes that expose more of your stuff to the public
2) Google+ connections can be unidirectional. On Facebook, if I friend you, you have to friend me. Its a two-way connection. WIth Google+, you can follow folks who don't follow you.
Its only two weeks old, so no one knows what it will look like after a month or three.
As far as the circles in Google+ go, I think the option to see stream of a particular circle is really good. Its much much easier to go through than facebook...
I still havent figured out how to send a private message. I had some trouble with adding my profile picture (actually added it to wrong places first 2 times).
Im only giving it a try cause it's from Google.
Ankit Garg wrote:The thing that pissed me off so much about facebook is when someone adds me to a group. I don't know what facebook thinks of groups but I don't want others to "join" me into a group.
I think only YOUR friends can add YOU to any group. and as they are your FRIENDS , FB thought it is OK to give that liberty. But you can always opt-out by yourself from any group.
I have never signed up for any app or game request. Infact I have disabled it.
I did not like G+ GUI. It's all broken. It needs to be tighten up stylesheet wise.
I want to explore this new application,
and i am still waiting for invitation
Thank you in advance.

Finally today i will see G+ ,
I am eagar to see that,
as i am in office now,i dont have access to that,
But today, at last i got it,
Thank you once again
I like how elegant and simple the interface is. I'm still not used to the black theme Google has introduced. I'd like to try G+ with the silver/white/blue theme they sometimes roll out on their search page on rare occasions late at night. (Maybe they're trying new things.) I also hope they don't bloat up the interface like Facebook. I like it simple. I also really like the idea of Circles where you can share geeky news with your geeky computer friends, which your other friends/family probably wouldn't give two hoots about.
I have yet to try all the other services.
Google is serious about this one, they have multiple upgrades queued up, ready to go. Not only will Google have every feature that Facebook has within one year, they have the depth of content to bring maps, docs, search, blogs, Android, location and a dozen other technologies to Google+ that will bury Facebook.
What does Facebook have? Facebook. That's it. They're a one trick pony that got there first. Once Google+ is offering Facebook and then some, there will be no reason to stay on Facebook.
