It is supposed to be better, after all it is from Google.

I know G+ is free, but I am wondering when will the time come when we will be paid just to provide our private information. Aggh, advertisement.

I'm not a "social networking" guy but I'm giving G+ a test drive. I think it is a brilliant product but IMHO it will be popular among IT people only.
FaceBook has a massive mind share and I don't think any one can take it from them in the near future.
On a side note: Google shouldn't allow their programmers to pick products names. I mean "Google+"? really?

I don't think this is fair. Wave and Buzz were huge, expensive failures. So far, I'm impressed with GO. Its not aimed at being a huge OO language to solve all known problems in Computer Science and Software Engineering, so I don't consider that it fails to solve said problems to be an issue.

Next time I have free reign to pick a language, I probably will try GO.

Now you can do video chatting from within FB with Skype integration.

I did not mean evrything from G is perfect but Google has earned the reputation, right? so my statement is based of my past experience.

I agree G+ is kinda geeky name.

Not really. They've had many more failures than they've had successes. That's not a bad thing -- I give them a lot of credit for trying lots of stuff and not being afraid to fail at something. But to assume that something that comes from Google is automatically great is not supported by history.

I think you can be much stronger than that. If you take at random a released product from Google, you will pick a product that failed. Google has two products that make money (search and YouTube) and a small number of products that are in widespread usage (gmail, calendar) but are not close to leading the market. Even in search, Google has only about 70% of the world-wide share, which is much, much smaller than the Windows market share at Microsoft's peak.

Google has tons of money, and tons of really smart engineers. From feedback of the blessed who can actually use Google+, its good. Their track record at releasing products is actually quite poor.

I find Facebook to be happening place where Google+ is not really. Lets wait and see where Google takes Google+. But Facebook got people to hang around with their apps- where as Google+ hasnt done that yet, they better do something similar (or come up with a new engaging idea) early to avoid it being another orkut.

The timeline of posts on my Google+ page is not clear- the post which was posted last year and if someone leaves a comment today then it suddenly shows up on the top of the list as the latest- So when I come back- I see - oh! what's happening with my timeline and when this happens for lots of previous post you really dont know what's Latest!

though I dont play any of the facebook games or apps I think that was something which got people to hang around on their site trying out different games/apps. Facebook missed closely monitoring the apps released by other developers and thereby led to lost of spam and what not. But I think they are monitoring it now. Facebook evolved and they evolved a lot faster.

Things might change, but as long as there's some way of getting to know whats happening among my friends or whats happening around I dont mind using that- be it Facebook, G+ or what ever.

Lots of them are excited with G+ claiming they have better privacy options, I think even Facebook has. And you just dont indulge in using fake/spam applications on Facebook and you are good to go. Most of the features in G+ are just slightly modified and named differently.

I agree the name could have been better. I'm just sick of some facebook "features" like no option to stop people from tagging you into photos, allowing you to add your friends to groups without their permission, answer questions about your friends in applications where your friend has to add the application to view your answer etc. All that I do these days on facebook is remove tags, leave groups, block question and answer applications and then delete the notifications from my inbox (at least that can be turned off but I have it on). From my experience on Orkut, google is better in this sense, you have control over such stupid things...

I have blocked just about all applications, so I never see updates from most apps, and don't feel compelled to sign up for them.

The "invite-only" marketing scheme just ticks me off, so I've been disinclined to even check it out.

I could be wrong, but even though Google has become a house-hold name, I can't see my cousins and other non-tech family members flocking to Google+ anytime soon, or even anytime at all. My prediction* is that Google+ can, at best, become Facebook For Geeks.

* Take my predictions with a grain of salt. I also predicted that the iPhone would never catch on.

I'm not inclined to sign up because it requires a public google profile. I *deleted* my public Google profile earlier in the year because that was the only way to turn off a setting that let everyone in your contact list see everyone else in your contact list.

I use gmail, google docs, google groups and google reader. That's too much info for them to leak out.

I'm on Facebook, but I only use it a bit. In other words, if someone writes on my wall, I'll poke around and see if anyone posted something interesting that day.

Right. But if I have to create a public profile, doesn't that reintroduce the original problem. The one I deleted my public profile to "fix"?

From what I've seen so far, a public Google+ profile need not divulge any more information than a public Facebook profile; i.e., it can be just the name, and that's it. (Disclaimer: I have NOT tried this, it's just my current understanding.)

I think, repeat think, that they actually fixed that. I'm pretty sure it was part of the bugfarm that was called Buzz. They got in huge trouble with that, including a Federal investigation.

Of course, I don't know of any way to actually be sure.

I've got a very basic Google profile, and nearly everyone in my contacts list are kinfolks. My kinfolks would not be shy about telling me if they were getting spammed because of me.

From what I've seen so far, Google+ is almost exactly the same as Facebook. I see just one major difference, that's the focus on Circles so that you can organize your contacts in different groups. I don't know if that's possible with Facebook; at least it's not presented as a primary feature on Facebook.

And Google+ is still brand new, so not as many people, companies and other groups are on Google+ yet.

I'm not a big fan of Facebook, I just don't see why it's so interesting. 99% of what people put on Facebook is uninteresting nonsense, I wouldn't miss anything if I didn't read it. From what I've seen so far, Google+ doesn't seem to have anything that makes it a lot more interesting than Facebook.

I also don't see the attraction of social networks like FaceBook, fouSquare, etc.

But there are two fundamental differences between FaceBook and Google+

1) Google makes token efforts to provide privacy controls, and has policies that they won't make arbitrary changes that expose more of your stuff to the public

2) Google+ connections can be unidirectional. On Facebook, if I friend you, you have to friend me. Its a two-way connection. WIth Google+, you can follow folks who don't follow you.

Its only two weeks old, so no one knows what it will look like after a month or three.

The thing that pissed me off so much about facebook is when someone adds me to a group. I don't know what facebook thinks of groups but I don't want others to "join" me into a group. Also facebook has become too much about applications, everything is an application.

As far as the circles in Google+ go, I think the option to see stream of a particular circle is really good. Its much much easier to go through than facebook...

I have never been a fan of social media, facebook, orkut etc. Yesterday I joined Google+ for curiosity. It looks like facebook, it's slow and I find it a bit difficult. My firends bragged about "hangout" where you could videochat with multiple persons but yet again I don't think much about it.

I still havent figured out how to send a private message. I had some trouble with adding my profile picture (actually added it to wrong places first 2 times).

Im only giving it a try cause it's from Google.

I think only YOUR friends can add YOU to any group. and as they are your FRIENDS , FB thought it is OK to give that liberty. But you can always opt-out by yourself from any group.

I have never signed up for any app or game request. Infact I have disabled it.

I did not like G+ GUI. It's all broken. It needs to be tighten up stylesheet wise.

I do agree that Google+ will be more popular with the IT community and geeky people, more than Facebook. I was talking with a new friend at my new job about G+ and mentioned that I was still waiting for the invite from Google, but he went ahead and sent me the invitation, so I thank him for that.

I like how elegant and simple the interface is. I'm still not used to the black theme Google has introduced. I'd like to try G+ with the silver/white/blue theme they sometimes roll out on their search page on rare occasions late at night. (Maybe they're trying new things.) I also hope they don't bloat up the interface like Facebook. I like it simple. I also really like the idea of Circles where you can share geeky news with your geeky computer friends, which your other friends/family probably wouldn't give two hoots about.

I have yet to try all the other services.

Give Google+ one year and Facebook will go the way of AOL.

Google is serious about this one, they have multiple upgrades queued up, ready to go. Not only will Google have every feature that Facebook has within one year, they have the depth of content to bring maps, docs, search, blogs, Android, location and a dozen other technologies to Google+ that will bury Facebook.

What does Facebook have? Facebook. That's it. They're a one trick pony that got there first. Once Google+ is offering Facebook and then some, there will be no reason to stay on Facebook.

Technical excellence and depth of features will only take it so far. I remain skeptical that they can attract the attention of anyone but us geeks.

Have to agree with @bear here. One critical thing that Facebook has, and only Facebook has, is close to a billion users. Everyone is there. Being the best with the geeks is not the path to total world domination.

Or force Facebook to implement more controls. Either way is an improvement over the current state of affairs.
