What are the design paradigms that Objective-C is based upon?

For one thing it is Object oriented, but what are the other factors that go behind the development of a new language. How and why exactly was Objective-C invented? What were the design objectives that it tries to achieve? How does it compare to other languages in terms of its internal implementation?

Thank you for the link to the wiki. I have gone through the same and also the Apple Documentation on Objective - C.
