SuD needs to interact with an internal application (which is also written in Java). What is the best way to communicate with it when no other details are provided? Since it's synchornous call, I believe JCA or Web Service could be used. But both (or any) approaches would require some changes in this existing application, which is outside SuD.

Shall I just assume any of these and go ahead? Any thoughts?

If the existing internal system doesn't have any exposed points, you do have to change something. In which case, it is fine to state that as an assumption.
