how can i encrypt the data that is been transmitted in my web service and enhance security. I am using java netbeans 6.1

That's what WS-Security does, which every major SOAP stack supports (assuming that your WS uses SOAP). If it's REST, you can use HTTPS.

so do i need to implement the WS security myself, if so then how do i do that

That depends on the SOAP stack you're using; it should come with examples and documentation.

i am really new to web services so how do i know the SOAP stack that i am using and how do i get the documentation. anyways is glassfish and tomcat examples of web service stacks

thanks a lot Dittmer i really appreciate the help. but the version of netbeans that i have does not support the metro security
stuff.i am tryin to install netbeans 7 but i keep getting the error
"You cannot install NetBeans 7.0 on this volume. This software can be installed and work only with Java 6."
i am using mac OS 10.5.7.thank u. what can i do to make it work.do i need to download a jdk if so where can i get it
from i have google it but not gotten anything fruitful
