By the way, the time to be using Java scriptlets in JSP is long, long past -- almost 10 years. Time to join us in 2011 and start using the JSTL and EL.

Hi Bear,

I'm working through the examples in Head First Servlets and JSPs. This is an example directly out of the textbook. I have to start somewhere, so I'm starting with the fundamentals.

Ah, ok. Just be aware that that's all historical now. New JSP code should never embed Java code.
 
It is sorta covered in the JavaRanch Style Guide.
