Hi everyone

As you know those who pass the exams after 1st October should have class attendance!:

Oracle Announcement

- In the above announcement it talks about assignment submission. Does SCJP (OCPJP) now include assignment? A few years ago only other exams (developer, web ...) had an assignment.

- I have been programming Java since perhaps 15 years ago and recently decided to do a certification exam (I have almost finished my PhD in computer science and have free time again). Does that mean I should pay US$$$$ to attend a class (even with 15 years of experience with java and a PhD in computer science) before I can sit for the exam?

Isn't that stupid?!

The announcement only apply for "Java Enterprise Architect and Java Developer candidates". If you pursue SCJP or OCPJP you're not required to take class and submit assignments.

I don't see any new requirements from Oracle for the OCPJP or SCJP, see the link below:

Contact Oracle for more info and to confirm...

Tommy , Thanks

But it seems they have changed the terminology a bit.

in the table in announcement page all JSE exams are coming under "Oracle Certified Master, Java SE 6 Developer" certification path and all JEE exams are listed under "Oracle Certified Master, Java EE 5 Enterprise Architect" path.

The sentence above the table says : "One of the courses in each list below will be required for each certification path. Candidates do not need to complete more than one course for each certification path."

I hope it does not apply to all exams or it will become very difficult to fulfill the requirements.

Aah, it seems those lists present the available courses (not certificates) from which you should select one (for either developer certificate or the architect).

If I'm not wrong you're pursuing OCPJP (Oracle Certified Professional Java Programmer) not Oracle Certified Master, Java SE 6 Developer right?

If so then don't worry about it, the requirements are for Developer not Programmer. You need to take the Programmer cert first before you can take the Developer cert.

Who's know what come next from Oracle, I heard that they required to take class for the Programmer cert, but not sure until confirm with Oracle.

Hope that clear up your confusion...

See info below that I got from Oracle's website for the Developer...

Oracle Certified Master, Java SE 6 Developer

This performance-based certification is for developers interested in demonstrating advanced proficiency in the Java programming language using the Java SE.

To achieve this certification, candidates must successfully complete two elements: a programming assignment and an essay exam. Prior to attempting certification, candidates must be certified as a Sun Certified Programmer (SCJP), any edition. It is not necessary to be a Sun Certified Java Associate prior to taking this exam.

Certification requirements are changing October 1, 2011. More >>

Oracle Certified Master, Java SE 6 Developer

* If you received your assignment prior to the Oracle transition, September 1, 2010, please note that your assignment will be graded only if you are pursuing the current Java SE6 Developer certification track. We will not review assignments for certification tracks prior to Java SE6 Developer certification. To determine the version of the certification track for your assignment that was received before the Oracle transition, you can refer to the email that you received from Sun with the exam assignment purchase details. The assignment exam should be #310-252A and it must have been purchased after January 2008. If you don't have your assignment purchase email, you can refer to the date you purchased your assignment and the assignment was issued. Valid assignments must have been issued after January 2008. Any assignment that was issued prior to this date is no longer valid as it was for a retired certification track. If you wish to pursue the Java Developer certification, you will need to complete the requirements above.

Candidates who did not pass the 1Z0-855 Java Standard Edition 6 Developer Certified Master Assignment (Step 1 of 2) and who want to resubmit, may do so by selecting the assignment link below.

1Z0-857 Java Standard Edition 6 Developer Certified Master Assignment for Resubmission

If you need to resubmit an assignment that you received prior to May 16, 2011, please see the instructions on how to do so.

Are you totally sure about it? I'm also going for the OCPJP (1Z0-851) and have been trying to get answer from Oracle on the need of attending a training and the deadline for taking the exam. First I called their helpline, the guy there totally useless, didn't know anything about the change of rules and tried to convince me that I need prior certification to take this one. So the flow of information was more the other way round. Then I'd sent an email to Oracle and they replied that I need to finish essay and assignment before 1st October, so I guess they had confused my certification with the Master one.

After this experience I'm not so sure it will be useful to contact Oracle again, so I better ask here. Is someone 100% sure the 1st October rule does NOT apply to OCPJP and I can schedule my exam for October without worries? Or should I rather take in on 30th September to be on the safe side?

What a mess. If their support line is not sure, then how we can know?

I guess the only way to become 100% sure is to wait until that time and see what is happening to those sitting for the exam!!

However, i also think they have thought you are taking Java developer exam (which has assignment). Only 2 exams have assignment, JC developer and JC Architect.

Ok, so I got another response from Oracle:

"We apologize for the confusion caused.
To earn your Oracle Certified Professional, Java SE 6 Programmer you have to pass the Exam Java Standard Edition 6 Programmer Certified Professional Exam (1Z0-851)
The Hands-on course requirement is not applicable for this certification track. Visit our website for more information."

So it seems taking OCPJP in October and later should be fine without the need for the training.
