Apparently there was a petition for Bert and Ernie of Sesame Street to get married. (The answer was no, they are puppets and don't have a sexual orientation.) This got me thinking - are any of the characters on Sesame Street married?

I grew up on Major Mudd, Captain Kangaroo, and Miss Jean. Sesame Street was after my time.

Luis and Maria got married on the show, apparently. I don't think any of the muppet characters are married, however.

Another person weighs in on why they should not. I think his reasons are valid.

I think Sesame Street SHOULD introduce a gay couple, but I don't think it should be done with puppets. I think they should use human actors.

I remember Luis, but not Maria. Gordon and Susan were the married couple during my watching tenure. They lived in the brownstone up the stairs from Oscar's trashcan.

Fun fact: my brother got the DVD of Sesame Street's first season, and a warning label on it says that it is unsafe for children to view. Something about a lost child turning to a stranger (probably Gordon) for help. Ah, what an innocent time 1969 was ... you know, except for all the drugs, institutional racism, and political assassinations.
