after copy server.xml from jboss 4.0.3 to jboss 4.2, the server cannot be run

as caption, there are many error in server.log, I copy some fragment of it and hope it is useful

You shouldn't be copying the server files from one version to another. If you have something application specific in those files, then just copy that part to the file in the newer version of the server. It's still not guaranteed that it will work, in which case you'll have to figure out how to port it.

I use your suggested method, try to merge instead of copy and paste, but the error is due the same, could the following error message show som hint?

in web.xml, I change
org.jboss.web.tomcat.tc5.StandardService
to
org.jboss.web.tomcat.service.session.JBossCacheManager

now the exception becomes
