Hi guys,

I am just wondering, now that the requirements of the Java Developer certification are changing and all you have to do is pay some money and attend some courses to pass, what is going to happen to this forum? I do not know if it is going to have the same volume of traffic, because those who are seeking answers will ask their tutors (or sometimes not ask at all. Why ask when you can simply pay and watch a video?). So, I am thinking that since the way we get certified will change, maybe the way this forum works will change as well. I hope that if it changes, it is going to be for the best, because it has been an invaluable source of information for many of us (including me of course) and Roberto and Roel are doing a terrific job here.

What do you all think?

I think you are correct concerning the traffic. And I can easily confirm this with a simple statistic: since October 1st there was not 1 question in this forum.

The mandatory courses are not specific to the assignment you have to make. When asking a certification-related question to the tutor will result in a no-answer because they have no clue at all about this certification. So I guess the forum will still be an invaluable resource of information concerning the certification and will keep existing, but because traffic will decrease significantly there will be 1 bartender instead of 2.

I would guess that the only new posts on this form will be people who are still waiting on their results; saying if they passed or not.

After that no new posts.

And if some1 does post a question their won't be anywhere near the same number of replies becuase no one will be looking at this form.

I'm Highly dissappointed in Oracle for adding these mandatory classes. I don't want to go on any courses & I definitely don't want to pay for courses I don't want to go on!

Do you have any feeling, how many developers will take the certification after changing the requirements with this needless classroom training?

I think the activity on this forum gives a really good idea about how little developers take the certification after the changed requirements: 20 threads since 1 October 2011. Before the mandatory course requirement in a normal week you had +- 20 threads. As far as I know just a few (not more than 5) developers are now busy with this certification

So this means that the number of people who are going through the certification has decreased (dramatically..)? Or that there are still many out there who are studying for the exam/courses but they don't bother creating new threads to this forum?

I had not the time to make the certification before October, and if I look at the requeirements now (stupid classroom course für hundreds of Euros plus travelling), so that the price for the certification increases about 3 times, then I must say, that I don't have fun to do the certification because the benefit is never that high... but if I read, that the number of threads decrease dramatically, that means that many people think like me... perhaps, in a year or so there a no certifications for Java anymore in the Oracle certification program...

I think Oracle will discontinue the Developer & Architect exams & say it was because no one is taking them any more.

But in actuality, no one is taking them because they can't afford to & don't want to go to a course.

If Oracle are loosing money running the courses then they should stop running them.

I was going to go all the way & get all my certifications but not now.

This has turned me off Java

Although I think this forum gives an answer to almost any question you would have doing this certification and thus there is no need to start new threads (but just use search engine), I'm convinced the seriously increased cost is main reason for the decrease. If you have to pay for certification yourself, you can take 2-3 other certs for the money you have to pay for OCMJD. And if you have a training budget from your employer, you'll have to spend it completely (depends of course on how big it is) on this certification.
