Although I've been reading the book SCJP Sun Certified Programmer for Java 6 Exam 310-065 Sierra/Bates for some time, I've really been studying for the exam for about 3 months.

I also used A Programmer's Guide to Java SCJP Certification: A Comprehensive Primer (3rd Edition) Khalid Mughal and Rolf Rasmussen and Head First Java Sierra/Bates

I would use the two secondary books to help illuminate topics with which I was having comprehension problems. It often helps me to read material on a topic from multiple authors.

Practice questions: The end-of-chapter quizes in the Sierra/Bates SCJP book plus the 2 Minute Drills were very helpful.
Exam Simulators: I really liked the exam simulator from Enthuware.com. It is very configurable so that you can select questions from specific objectives and set the number of questions and time limits. I think the questions in Enthuware were a little more difficult, on average, than the actual exam.
The practice exams from UCertify were also good. I think they were more representative of the average difficulty of the questions on the real exam.

In several instances, I found myself questioning whether the answer given was really correct. This is the time to write some code. Prove the code sample behaves as the answer states. Just reading the books will not likely get you successfully through this exam.

Not sure where I will go from here. I want to get some real world coding under my belt. I'm going to explore Android development, for certain.

Hi I am going to give the OCPJP 6 exam in a week. But I have scored 48% in whizlabs simulator practice test. Can you little guide me is this ok to just pass the OCJP 6 or i should prepare more before taking the actual exam. I have studied K&B book twice. (Is the Whizlabs simulator questions are harder than the real exam questions?)

I am not familiar with Whizlabs (and did not use it), so I can't really say how they compare. I don't know that I would be comfortable entering into the real exam with any practice exams at 48%, however.

In 'studying K&B twice', are you just reading, or are you actually writing code and doing the exercises? I think it would be the rare person who can pass this exam by only reading about the material.

48% is a bit too low. How was your final mock from K&B book?

Try http://scjptest.com/mock-test.xhtml?execution=e1s1 .If you score over 70%.You are good for the exam. The questions are very smilar to the exam ones.

Congratulations Keith!

85% is a great score. You should try the OCWCD.

Do you know a good book for Android Development?

So far, I've done a combination of reading from the developer.Android.com documentation and have started watching the video tutorials on Android Dev basics on lynda.com (Lynda.com is an outstanding resource for training material on a lot of topics, BTW.) The android.com documentation seems to be doing a good job of explaining the basics, but I'm not too deep into it yet

I have a copy of Unlocking Android, but I really haven't started reading it yet.

The OCPJP exam was my last requirement for my Bachelor's degree at Western Governors University. Now that school work is completed, I can start exploring some of the things I want to use Java for.

Hi Keith, from South East London UK - I took the exam this morning and almost fainted when I got 93%

I used both the Sierra/Bates and the Mughal/Rasmussen books for studying, created lots of sample code along the way. The MasterExam with the S/B book was a great help, especially as you can select how many questions you want - great for when you have 5 minutes to spare. However I think what really helped me was the Bates' Practice Exam Book (thanks Bert ;) ) - I was getting only 50% or so of the questions right but working through every question and understanding them really helped. Although I'm not sure I'll ever work out that "Organic<E>" question

Experiment with your code samples too, seeing what happens when you try different things. I also found it useful to mix other areas into a question, especially formatting. So instead of using "System.out.println(x)" use a static import and use 'out.format("The %2$s is >%1$-7d<", x, "answer")' etc. It helps cement those topics so they become second nature.

Good luck to everyone working towards the exam

Cheers, John

That's an outstanding score, John! Congratulations!

I agree that understanding WHY an answer is correct is vastly more important than just knowing it IS correct.
