I am considering doing the SCJD course, having recently passed the SCJP exam.

I have been working as a programmer for the past 10 months and have learned a good deal in that time. However, my background is not in programming but in Applied Mathematics and much of what I have learned is picked up day-to-day without much more knowledge of the background to what I am doing (many terms are still very vague to me etc.).

I was wondering, is there a large increase in difficulty between the two courses, SCJP and SCJD? Is there enough information in a good book alone (eg. Monkhouse) to guide you from one to the other?

Any input would be much appreciated. Thanks.

The Monkhouse book will provide more than enough information. And since October 2011 you are required to follow a mandatory course, so you can pick one appopriate one and learn a lot from that course too.

It is sorta covered in the JavaRanch Style Guide.
