Can you provide some context where you heard these terms? They're not part of any standard Java terminology that I've ever heard.

A mode of operation is a unique set of the properties described in that link.
A mode descriptor is a class that encapsulates one or more of those properties.

The ones listed in tables 4-1, 4-2 and 4-3.

And, as an FYI, it's either Joanne (preferably) or Ms Neal. Neal on it's own is extremely curt.

No problem. With western sounding names, you should use the first name in informal situations (such as internet forums) or the last name with appropriate title (Mr, Mrs, Miss, Ms, Doctor, etc) if you want to be more formal. Obviously the latter is a bit more difficult if you're not sure if the person is a man or a woman.
Just the last name on its own tends to imply a hierarchy with the user believing that they are somehow in a position of power or superiority - a school master to a pupil or an army sergeant to a private for example.

I put Joanne in my signature to indicate how I prefer to be addressed.

I tend to apply the same rules to non-western sounding names such as yours. I don't know whether it's right or not - I'm sure someone will let me know if there's any problem.
