a java bean is just a plain old java class which acts as the "model" in the MVC pattern
The usual flow will be as
servlet(controller)->java bean(model)->servlet(controller)->jsp/html(view)
usually the bean class acts like a helper application

That is just one small part of what JavaBeans are used for. Any question that starts with "What is a ..." is best answered by searching sites such as Wikipedia as in JavaBean.
