Prerequisite courses

+Pie Number of slices to send: Send
I am trying to work out the course prerequisites for the Developer certification.

I see from the Oracle site that one of the courses that count as a prerequisite to OCMJD is Java SE 7 New Features.

But Java SE 7 New Features has the Fundamentals of the Java Programming Language, Java SE 6 as a required prerequisite.

I know that a Self Study CD-ROM of Java SE 7 New Features does not count towards the OCMJD.

But does a Self Study CD-ROM of Java Programming Language, Java SE 6 count as fulfilling the prerequisites of the Java SE 7 New Features course, so that I can then take the "Training on Demand" version of Java SE 7 New Features course, and finally take the OCMJD certification?

I've emailed Oracle, but no reply yet.....

P.S. It's bad enough that certifications have courses as prerequisites, but I can't believe that courses now require other courses as prerequisites!!

I think what they want to say is 'This course is for people who know Java 6 wanting an upgrade to Java 7. It is not for somebody who wants to learn Java.' So the prerequisite is to know the fundamentals of the Java Programming Language, Java SE 6 but it is not mandatory to do any official course. Would be nice to have a conformation from Oracle though.

I had a look at the official "Java SE 7 New Features" course page and it mentions "Fundamentals of the Java Programming Language, Java SE 6" 2 times under "Prerequisites": once just plain text and another one a link to the course. Based on the plain text occurence I assume it just requires knowledge of the fundamentals of Java Programming Language.
Otherwise it would also not make much sense: I have already the SCJP 6.0 certification under my belt (without following a course), so that would mean I have to follow the "Fundamentals" course (although I already proved I have the knowledge) in order to be able to follow the "New Features" course.

I've just passed the OCMJD assignment and essay (362/400).
Unfortunately I've not attended one of the mandatory course and Oracle noticed me that I have to attend the course in order to get the certification kit.

So I had a look on the approved course here :
http://education.oracle.com/pls/web_prod-plq-dad/db_pages.getpage?page_id=245
and there is the "Java SE 7 New Features TOD" TOD means Traning On Demand.
I ask Oracle to confirm me that this course is acceptable to get the certification kit. They have just answered me that it is ok.

Best regards.

Congratulations!
So, all you'll have to do now is attend a course

Are there any cheap trainings from Oracle for this certification? Most of them are within the 800-2200 euros each.
Thank you for any input.

Yes, the cheapest seems to be Java SE 7 New Features 'Training on Demand'. It sounds like paying like £800 for a bunch of lectures on video

And did Oracle say whether or not you also needed to take the Fundamentals of the Java Programming Language, Java SE 6 course listed as a "Required Prerequisite" at Java SE 7 New Features

Thanks to the other posters who think that this prerequisite refers to just knowing the Fundamentals (rather than taking a course), but I would like to hear Oracle say it....

Finally got a reply straight from Oracle

Dear Customer:
Service Request Number 23509275 (AutoSR : OCP | OCP: 1 | Issue Type : Oracle Certified Master (OCM)) has been updated.

Dear John,
Thank you for writing to Oracle Certification Program Team.
1) Please note that prerequisites trainings are not mandatory and hence it is not compulsory to take prerequisites trainings.
2) You can enroll for the course Developing Applications With the Java SE 6 Platform directly without taking the prerequisites trainings and apply the same towards your Oracle Certified Master, Java SE 6 Developer certification track .

So from their email, I deduce that even if course A is listed as a "Required Prerequisiste" of course B, taking course A is not compulsory. Strange use of the word "Required", but I'm just happy to get a clear answer.

BTW in my email to Oracle, I used the example of the Developing Applications With the Java SE 6 Platform course rather than Java SE 7 New Features course that has been used in this thread.

I also had a similar reply from Oracle as I'm thinking about the Java tuning course as it's looks to be one of the more useful ones to do

Hey All,

So I have tried going through most of the threads but I'm still confused about how much is it going to cost in USD to get OCMJD Java SE 6(1Z0-855 & 1Z0-856).
Are these prerequisites discussed here are only for Java SE 7 cert?
Oracle website does not have clear information either or at least I'm still confused what they mean by required but someone said in this post earlier that they are not mandatory.

I'm planning on giving OCMJP Java SE 6 by end of July 2012 and register and try to finish all 2 parts of OCMJD by end of the year.
I would appreciate if anyone could help me on getting an estimate of how much OCMJD is going to cost and if there are any prerequisites.

I'm new to this so please pardon if I did not follow any thread etiquette.

Regards,
Adi

You can easily find this out on either Oracle's official website, or from voucher vendors in your area.

Aditya Padhye wrote:Are these prerequisites discussed here are only for Java SE 7 cert?

Currently, there are only two certifications available for Java SE 7 - OCAJP and OCPJP. OCMJD is not available for Java SE 7 (yet). The above pre-requisites are for OCMJD for JSE 6.

Where did you try to find out? Can you provide any links etc? Generally, all Oracle's certification page clearly mention about basic things like eligibility, passing score, mandatory courses(if any), list of such courses and so on.

In that case, I would suggest that for now, stop worrying about OCMJD and focus on OCPJP.

I hope this helps.

All The Best!

One question to this mandatory courses:
Because of the time- and money-consuming courses, I was thinking, if I need to go and sit in the classroom. I would buy the course, of course, but some courses are 5 days and for that, I need hotel, waste 5 holidays, have travel expenses and so on. So, is it enough to buy and pay for the course, so that the requirement is fullfilled or do I really need to sit and waste 5 days for nothing?

Thanks for any response.
Ulrich

That's an interesting question. If you want to know for sure, you have to ask Oracle.

In most courses I followed you have to sign an attendence list. So if you don't show, it could be interpreted as "didn't follow the course" and thus you failed to meet the mandatory course requirement. So I assume just paying the course will not be enough.

I wrote to Oracle, but they are not really responsive.
Did you had sign the list every day or only one day?

Mostly you have to wait a few business days before getting an answer.

Ulrich Cech wrote:Did you had sign the list every day or only one day?

So far I didn't follow an Oracle course yet. But at the beginning of this year I followed a 4-day Spring course (which is also mandatory if you want to become Spring certified) and I had to sign the list every day.

Ok, then I think this would be the same in Oracle courses. That's really daunting: Paying for a useless course and in addition wasting holidays and paying for hotel and traveling expenses.

Thanks for your answer and bye,
Ulrich
