Is there a recommendation on "How to satisfy the new course requirement" for Architect certification ? All the courses seems to be expensive - I'm through the three levels and pondering over this step.
Any suggestions

Hi there,

I took the course "Developing Architectures for Java Enterprise Applications" in Nov/Dec 2012. I liked it, because it was pretty focused on doing the assignment (part 2 and 3) and when doing the assignment, indeed I found it helpful.

On the other hand, it was rather theoretical and 4 days. Some of the students had also taken "Developing Applications for the Java EE 5 platform" and they said it was basically the same, but it was 1 day more (5) and much more practical. They said it was the same, but you get to do try things out yourself right away. So I guess that one would be more recommendable.

Hope that helps,

Paul

Thanks. Is there a time limit with in which I need to complete the course requirement?. Got an email that I cleared all three parts on April 12. Can I wait for a month or two to comply with
the course attendence requirement?

I only know about a time limit after downloading the assignment (part 2): You have to complete it within 6 months after downloading it. Other than that, I don't think there are any time limits. For example, I took part 1 in August 2010 and I completed the assignment in March 2012. Not a problem (not even the fact that it's a different company now).

I've decided not to take the mandatory training for now. As someone else echoed earlier, I tend to think that clearing the three parts of the exam is more important to be certified than taking a mandatory course for the sake of getting a success kit. It doesn't make sense in my opinion to take this "imposed" training on 3 counts.

1. I was able to clear the three sections without training.
2. Can't take off from work to do this.
3. Cost is prohibitively high for five days of instruction.

One can always show the EMAIL from Oracle as proof of having been certified and the employers would be logical enough to understand our stance.

Any thoughts?

Hi Sunderam,

I agree, I'm not impressed with the introduction of mandatory courses either

Hi Sunderam,

I agree with your thinking. A few comments though: I don't think the typical price of around €2000 is very much for 5 days of training. I took the course "Developing Architectures for Java EE Applications" (my company sponsored it) and I thought the quality was quite reasonable. I thought the course was helpful guidance when doing the assignment.

That said, if I would have had to pay the course myself, I'd have done the same as you and skip it. It's a pity, but it's not worth €2000 of my own money. From the point of view of learning from the certification, I learned most from the books I read to prepare, and from the point of view of using the certification for your career, I think that being able to show that you passed the assignment should be enough.

Cheers-
