arrrgh.

yes, of course.
will the manual installation do it, then?
or, is there a newer mysql that does it?

(and seemingly i fooled myself somewhere. when i switch the language, the selected value for database switches back to mysql. so seemingly i didnt retry with HSQLDB, as i said before)

nevertheless, many thanks, rafael, for the nice software, and for the quick help.

greetings, troedler

Hello all,

I get strange error messages, please help.

Well, to be more specific:

yesterday i installed jforum with HSQLDB, and everything went fine, so i was happy.

because of that i tried it in anger, deleted it, and re-installed with mysql.

and there i got error messages every now and then.

after fiddling around with different languages and encodings, i gave up and moved back to HSQLDB - but now i get the same errors there.
(and yes, i dropped the mysql db between the trials, and removed the whole jforum directory from tomcats webapps directory before reinstalling)

well such the history, now the errors:

at the web page, after loggin in as admin, and inserting a category, the page says (in the area named "Information"):

java.lang.reflect.InvocationTargetException: General error: java.lang.IllegalArgumentException

or, after trying to insert a new forum, i get

java.lang.reflect.InvocationTargetException: java.nio.BufferUnderflowException

and tomcat floods me with something i dont understand (i quote everything after tomcats start up to the first error):

the strange thing is, everything works now and then, and everything crashes now and then. if i re-click persistently, i can do everything. well, but its not really comfortable ;-)

(and definitely not how i know jforum is able to work)

if anybody knows whats going on here, i'd be happy to listen.

thanks for your help, and kind regards, troedler

Which mysql version are you using? 4.1? JForum installer will fail to configure appropriately for mysql 4.1.

For mysql 4.1, you should use manual installation. Also, please note for some encoding problems. Edit WEB-INF/config/database/mysql/mysql.properties and remove the useUnicode=true&characterEncoding=UTF-8 (it will be represetnted by variables, but you got the point). The next jforum version, 2.1, will include support for mysql 4.1 through the installer.

Thanks for the good feedback

thanks again, and i'm still not done ..

the fields seem to be

dbencoding=UTF-8
dbunicode=true

actually removing them seems to be unwise (loads of errors). so i just changed 'em.
but my try still doesnt succeed.

dbunicode=false
dbencoding=iso-8859-1

same kind of brittleness as before. is this an unsuitable encoding?

greetings from behind my keyboard,
troedler

btw.:

1. when creating the tables, i get

Warning 1287 'TYPE=storage_engine' is deprecated; use 'ENGINE=storage_engine' instead

2. maybe i cannot read, but i didnt find the following in the manual install page:
i had to change sone files in the jforum root directory. remove the old index.htm and give new_rename.htm the name to be found as default file.

3. when i look into configurations, from the admin panel, i see Character Encoding to be set to UTF-8. is this sensible?
(if not, what would be?)

just my two cents ;-)

Ok, this is beucase I've created in the times for mysql 4.0.x.

2. maybe i cannot read, but i didnt find the following in the manual install page:

Indeed. This information is missing.

It is case insensitive. This encoding is for the HTML pages.

just my two cents ;-)

Thanks
