Often, when accessing the forum the first time in the browser session, using /JForum/, I get an empty page at /JForum/forums/list.page with the following information. Reloading the forum helps. What could be the cause of the problem?

com.mysql.jdbc.CommunicationsException: Communications link failure due to underlying exception:

Please use "net.jforum.SimpleConnection" as "database.connection.implementation" (set in SystemGlobals.properties). MySQL has some problems with the connection polls depending the driver's version you're using.

I already have that setting. Here's the database section:

database.driver.name=mysql
database.connection.implementation = net.jforum.SimpleConnection
database.use.transactions = true
database.datasource.name = java:/MySqlDS
database.ping.delay = 3600000
login.authenticator = net.jforum.drivers.external.DefaultLoginAuthenticator

MySQL version is 4.0.22-standard
OS is Linux

Seems like the problem is solved. I had two different JForum directories on the same Tomcat server. After removing one of them, the forum works.
