Mail Notification

I am not receiving mail notifications when I receive a private message or receive a reply to a post. I am convinced that this is not a network issue - I set up a reverse proxy server in between the forum software machine, and the mail server and reconfigured the forum to use the reverse proxy, so that I could observe whatever traffic it sends. The forum software does not even attempt to contact the reverse proxy (and therefore, the mail server).

I have "Send an email to nofity users when a topic reply is post" set to "True", and I have fiddled around with other options in the user profile, to no avail.

Is there some obvious configuration option that prevents any kind of mail notification from being sent? I cannot even observe an attempt to contact my local proxy masquerading as the mail server.

It seems like a bounce of the application server solved it, and refreshedthe configuration.
