I am trying to implement some paging on my custom FAQ page using AJAX. I was browsing the src code today and noticed that there is some sort of implementation of DWR in jforum and was wondering how I could use objects in freemarker asynchronously. I am really not sure how this would work but could I add some methods to AjaxUtil.java that return the objects that i need then somehow call those methods from freemarker?

You sure can.

Also, you can make your own custom utilities class and declare it at WEB-INF/dwr-jforum.xml.

If you know how to use DWR, it will be painless.
