I am facing some problem in installing the fourm

Sounds like you downloaded the 2.1.5 --> 2.1.6 upgrade patch. You need to download the full 2.1.6 version.

I am facing some problem in installing the fourm.
So I decided to get help from you. I write steps in detail which I follow....
Please help me.......

I download " JForum-2.1.6.zip " file from the website. I unzip it. Now after unzip there are 4 folders only in the JForum-2.1.6 folder. Named as

images
templates
upgrade
WEB-INF

But here I think there must be a folder named " install " where " install.page " file exist too. But that folder didn't exists. Isn't so............

Rename the JForum-2.1.6 folder to JForum and copy to the root folder of the tomcat.
And then I start the tomcat.
I type in the path bar
http://localhost:8080/jforum/

Now index.html page runs and it redirects to the
http://localhost:8080/jforum/install/install.page?module=install&action=welcome

Now as the tomcat didn't find install.page file so the file not found error message comes.


Now I think, I write it in full detail and I hope you understand my problem.
Now Sir please help me.
I shall be very thankfull to you for this act of kindness
I want to start a fourm as soon as possible.

I just downloaded the 2.1.6 JForum zip file from the downloads page and after extracting got these files/dirs:

-ChangeLog.htm
-Documentation.htm
-How to Install.htm
-License.txt
-SourceCode.txt
-Upgrading.html
-__index.redirect
-index.htm
-WEB-INF <DIR>
-images <DIR>
-templates <DIR>
-upgrade <DIR>
(notice there is no "install" directory)

The 2.1.5 to 2.1.6 upgrade patch zip file contains these files/dirs:

-How To Patch.htm
-templates <DIR>
-WEB-INF <DIR>

So the contents are clearly different, and sounds like you did download the correct file.

I just did a reinstall ( for Tomcat 5.0.28 ) and had no problems with the current download file. The URL I used to access the install page was: http://localhost:8080/JForum.

The process I use is to unzip the file, rename the directory to JForum, then move that entire JForum directory (and all subdirectories) to the $CATALINA_HOME/webapps directory. Then I usually restart Tomcat just to make sure it picks it up the new app OK.

Perhaps you got a bad download. Try redownloading it and see if you still have the same problem.

There is a page on the installer that still says "2.1.5" ... even though you ARE installing 2.1.6.

Just keep going and check the version listed at the bottom of the login screen after you have completed the install.

I am also getting this problem. I guess its due to some of the mirrors not being updated as i was using one in Australia. Can someone tell me a mirror the have used which has the install directory in the image. Thanks

whats the status of this issue? because i've come across the same problem when performing a manual install

overview:
Tomcat 5.5.17
Windows 2000
JForum 2.16
Oracle 10.2

when removing the line "install = net.jforum.view.install.InstallAction" from the modulesMapping.properties file,
the "http://localhost:8080/jforum/install/install.page?module=install&action=welcome"
attempts to run on startup. There was the statement to rename "new_rename.htm"
in the root directoy, but that file doesn't come with the JForum-2.1.6.zip
(nor could i find it elsewhere).


On a slightly seperate note, the reason for choosing a manual install is because
I'm running into this error when trying to perfrom the automatic install:

I don't know if it's related... but I've been trying to work with Java based forums for the past week. I've managed to make 2 of them work, but up to now I still haven't managed to make JForum work.

At first I gave up completely, but seeing that JForum might have more capabilities than the others, I kept on trying.

I'm trying to deploy it on a Tomcat 5.0.28 and I get this error message

FAIL - Application at context path /jforum could not be started

I'm using Java SDK 1.4.0.

An officemate managed to make it work on his PC, but on mine, whatever I do I can't seem to make it work. I've uninstalled and installed Tomcat multiple times already. I've followed the steps... unloading in a directory... deploying through the web based interface, deploying manually... both on the /jforum context... but I can't seem to get into http://localhost/jforum.

I get this message when I try to get in:

The requested resource (/jforum/) is not available.

So what could I have missed? I'm quite open to suggestions... ^_^;;

EDIT: I tried deploying by specifying the web.xml path. The error it returns is

Error deploying application at context path null

There should be happened some other critical error in the process of context registration in Tomcat. Please attach the log file here, so we can take a look on it.

Oops... was not able to post it, but I managed to make it work. I installed Tomcat in its default directory instead of my own, and weirdly enough it just worked.

But just in case, I'll attach my log files here...

"/install" path is an servlet, template file in template/default/install*.htm. please input the install path in y intenet explorer now.

Dear friends,
I think, I got where is the problem.
Infact JFourm is developed according to the some of rules of an application server.
And we try to upload it on the web server......

I got it when I try it by puting JFourm directory in the webapps directory of the tomcat 5.0.9
It works very good. Very easily installed and configuried.

So when we copy it to the root folder of the tomcat it show errors and didn't get installed.....
But when we copy it to the webapps directory of the tomcat 5.0.9 , it Very easily installed and configuried.

Because tomcat 5.0.9 's webapps folder some how react like web server. Because there we have to deploy our own deployment descripter for servlet . And Jfourm has its own deployment descripter in the web-inf folder........

But this thing has a problem as well. We did not upload it and configured it on the shared web hosting. We need an application server web hosting for its uploading, where we can deploy our own servlet deployment descripter.
like JBoss, Weblogics etc,etc
It means if we have tomcate web hosting then we must have the rights to upload our files in the Webapps folder rather then root folder.

Can you develop one modified jfourm which can be copied to root folder of the tomcat. In other world whic can be easily deploy on web server and follow the rules of web server........

I don't think that you will find any free hosting services that will be able to run JForum. Java hosting services has just been around for a year or so. But I might be proven wrong. Searched for "free java tomcat hosting" on Google?
