In many applications (like a blog), it makes sense to display the topics with the first post, then people can drill into a specific topic to see all the comments.

Should the Topic object contain a firstPost object?

It does contain the id of the first post - topic_first_post_id -, so you can retrieve it from the db.

In JForum 3.0, however, we probably will have the Topic to contain a list of Posts
