I can't see the smilies

I have given up trying to install jforum in jboss so I installed it in tomcat.
I ran through the installation and everything seemed to be running pretty well, but I can't see the smilies when Posting a new message.
I read a few threads in the forums about it and applied the suggestions, but I still can't see the smilies.

What database?

Take a look at the html source code, in the place the smilies were supposed to appear. What's in there?
