Ok Im new to this kind of installation. First of all I unzipped jforum 2.17. Then I uploaded all the folder's and file's inside (images,META-INF,templates,tmp,upgrade,upload,WEB-INF,chnagelog.htm,Documentation.htm,howtoinstall.htm,index.html,install.jsp,latest_version.txt,license.txt, and sourcecode.txt) then I pointed my browser to http://forums.epiccoders.com and it said 404 not found "The requested URL /forums/list.page was not found on this server." So I tried this "http://forums.epiccoders.com/install.jsp"; and this appeared "<jsp:forward page="install/install.page?module=install&action=welcome"/>"..... so I download tomccat... installed it... ran it.... then pointed my browser to "http://localhost:8080/jforum/install.jsp"; but then it said "type Status report

message /jforum/install.jsp

description The requested resource (/jforum/install.jsp) is not available.
"..........

I DONT KNOW WHAT I HAVE TO DO.... and why I have to install it this way...... but I uploaded all the files to my sub domain "forums.epiccoders.com" how do I install this? please help me.

Where did you put the unzipped jforum files? They should be in the $CATALINA_HOME/webapps/jforum directory (or whatever you named the jforum dir). I usually unzip the jforum-xxxxxxx.zip file, rename the resulting directory to "jforum", and move that directory into the $CATALINA_HOME/webapps directory. I run Linux, so I also chown the dir & files to tomcat.

Are you installing on a local computer ("... pointed my browser to http://localhost:8080/jforum/install.jsp")? If this is not the case, you will need to use the domain or server name URL where tomcat is running instead of "localhost."

Also the jforum-2.1.7-b3.zip file is missing the "__index.redirect file," which will give you the "write access required" error that has been discussed in this forum.

Today I downloaded and installed the latest jforum-2.1.7-b3.zip file ... and once I copied in the __index.redirect file, the installer worked fine (using Tomcat 5.5, MySQL 5, and Gentoo Linux).

Well, you need to decide where you want to install it, locally or on a host. You can install it either place, however, usually if you want the "world" to have access to it, you don't install it locally.

And yes, you can use FTP to copy the jforum files to the host server.

If you are using a commercial hosting service, you will need to find out where to transfer the files to. Not all hosting companies offer Java hosting either (which is required to run JForum).

So i uploaded the jforum 2.1.8, to server : http://software-helper.ilive.ro/forum/

And i read in the instalation document, that i have to go to forum/install.jsp..., so i entered in the browsers page : http://software-helper.ilive.ro/forum/install.jsp.

A message appeared <jsp:forward page="install/install.page?module=install&action=welcome"/>.

I'm new in this java thing, and i am thinking to try another forum, but i want to ask here 1'.

Why didn't you put in the zip file of the jforum, the tomcat folder? or better to put the jforum in the tomcat? because you said that i have to put the jforum folder in the tomcat/webapps. and why isn't the __index.redirect file in the jforum folder, since u said that the file is needed?

Can i install the forum in my computer using tomcat (localhost:8080/jforum/...), and then upload it to my host server with a ftp program?

PLEASE Help !!

You already have phpBB running at http://software-helper.ilive.ro/forum/ ... why would you try to use the same URL for JForum?

Is tomcat running on your hosted server? If so what port (doesn't seem to be 8080). Not all ISPs offer full Java hosting ...

Yes, you can install locally and FTP, but you will have to change your config files (i.e. DB connections, site URLs, etc.)

i have changed the url and installed phpbb forum in http://software-helper.ilive.ro/forum/.
The java forum is in the http://software-helper.ilive.ro/jforum/.
I like this java forum but i can't start it. On my compuyter it works, but on server :| nothing.I tried to upload only the tomcat files and in webapp to pun jforum folder, but it didn't work that way either.

Can you tell me at least what should i upload, to server, the tomcat or the jforum folder, and i will search another host. Butt i'm sure that this host offers php, mysql and apache suport :|.

Can you point to me where should i look for information about uploading the jforum after i installed it on my computer (what changes i have to make on what files)?

Thanks for reply and sorry for editing the post and create another topic, .

First you need to find out whether your host offers Java support .. i.e. tomcat. If not, you cannot just upload tomcat and get it to work (unless you have your own virtual or real server with a root shell account allowing you to install applications to run on the server). So, if your ISP does not offer Java support, you are done with your install! ;-)

Most all ISPs offer PHP, Apache, and MySQL .... very few offer java support unless you specifically go to a java hosting ISP.

Many ISPs say they support java, but they really mean in the form of applets, not full java applications (GoDaddy and 1&1 fall into this category).
