Where does "javax.servlet.error.exception" AKA RequestDispatcher.ERROR_EXCEPTION get set?

I am have an error page mapping in my web.xml file which retrieves javax.servlet.error.exception from the request scope to log the stack trace. I am seeing numerous errors which show null for a stack trace. Where is this attribute supposed to be set and why is it not happening? I am using Spring 3.0.5 and Tomcat 7.0.

Any ideas appreciated.

Thanks,
Rob

Are you sure about that exception name?

In the servlet3.0 API, the javax.servlet package has only ServletException and UnavailableException.

It's not an exception name. It's a key used to find where a stack trace is set in the request. RequestDispatcher.ERROR_EXCEPTION = "javax.servlet.error.exception";

When an exception is thrown by a web application, it's stack trace is supposed to be stored there.

Well, that string is a constant in RequestDispatcher

Searching the source code I can see more than 20 places it can be set as a request attribute, so you have lots of places to look
