Hi, I was told by my employer to learn SOA and Webmethods before I join my new company through telephonically. I work in Java technology. What is webmethods? Is it an application server, any frameworks or something deals or used in SOA? I googled and found it as an application server. Please confirm me what is it and how can and from where I can start learning it. I cannot call my new employer again to confirm this as would not be correct. He just told me this and that too through telephone only so I heard this much only.
And also by the way, does SOA means writing Web services in Java?

Webmethods is a commercial product, so your first stop should be the company's web site; I'm sure they have a developer section where you can find out all about it.

SOA is an architectural style; its Wikipedia page should get you going. It can (and often is) based on web services, but needn't be. Being an architecture, it can be used in any language.

Perhaps your employer was talking about the javax.jws.WebMethod annotation, for use in web services.

As for not calling your employer, that is exactly what I would do if the request was ambiguous. You wouldn't want to spend all your time learning one thing only to find out he meant another.

True.... but when someone says webmethods, I would bet good money that they mean the ESB product (formerly also the name of company, which was bought by software AG), especially since they used SOA in the same sentence.
