Java concept will never change you can go with anyone, if you do 7 and think that 8 will never come then you are wrong.

Dear All,

As we all know that to get OCP Java 7 Certified, you need to first take OCA Java 7 exam or you should be OCP for any previous version of Java like say Java 6. I want your opinion in deciding which path should I take. Shall I go for Java 6 certification and then for OCP Java 7 certification or should follow the new path and do OCA and OCP Java 7?

Thank you.

Regards,
Palak Mathur

Do 6 and then upgrade it with 7.

If you are interested in getting the most out the process of acquiring certifications (in terms of learning), taking OCPJP 6 and then upgrading it to SCPJP 7 is a very good idea. But remember that OCPJP6 is not easy and neither is the upgrade to 7.

So if you don't have any certification and are not confident about your Java skills, you may want to go with OCAJP 7 first because it is a lot easier than OCPJP 6. Having OCAJP 7 may look better on your resume than having no certification at all.

Welcome to CodeRanch!

Please, do not post a different question in ongoing thread. You can create a new thread for it. Even better, I would suggest to SearchFirst, and take a look at FAQ of corresponding forum (this forum is for programmer certification, there's separate forum for associate certification).

I hope this helps.

Hi Paul,

Thank you for replying. Now I am really confused. I have been working on Java since 2005 and have experience in JSP, Servlets and EJB. Now, what should I do - Go for OCAJP way or OCPJP 6 --> OCPJP 7 way?

There is no book available presently for 7 neither for OCJA nor for OCJP yet so you have to wait that's why i said go with 6.but you can use old book if you are happy with that.

Hi Saloni,

Thank for your help. However, my concern is not about the availability of book(s) (though it surely is a stalker). I started preparing for 1.4 back in 2005, then came 5 and now 7but due to some reasons I couldn't take the exam. Now, I want to take the exam asap as the hindrances (or rather I should not call them that) are not there.

My only concern is what will be the best way to go for the exam. Should I concentrate solely on Java 7 or should I concentrate on Java 6 first?

There is no option that you can face directly ocjp 7 without ocja, where as in 6 you can go directly. 6 is an old stable version while 7 is new now you have to decide.

Not a problem Besides, saloni jhanwar has already posted the link to SCJP FAQ in one of the posts. That would answer almost all of your questions.

All the best.

Now, since OCPJP 7 non-beta exam is in place, it makes more sense to go through OCPJP 7 way.

As far as the study material for OCPJP 7 concerns, there is one book available now by Ganesh and Sharma. Another book will be available in June end by K&B. Here is a blog which provides some information about OCPJP 7 exam.
