Head First Servlets & JSP: Passing the Sun Certified Web Component Developer Exam (second edition) by Bryan Basham, Kathy Sierra, Bert Bates, This book gives you a very good comparison with old web frameworks, it also tries to give the reader a good back ground in good application development architecture. Refer http://www.coderanch.com/t/93812/Book-Reviews/Head-First-Servlets-JSP-Kathy you can get information about this book.

It is sorta covered in the JavaRanch Style Guide.
