You can for apps that cache data. I can read my e-mail and queue it up to send while in the subway (train without internet.)

Don't know about freemind. For CodeRanch, your browser is compatible with android. We have a nice mobile view. We don't offer offline access. It would be hard to predict what you wanted to read in advance of going offline.

Why are you asking how to use a smartphone "effectively", while what you really wanted to ask was how to use a smartphone when you don't have an Internet connection?

A smart phone isn't going to make you any smarter. The best thing a programmer can do to improve is to read and write code. If you are interested in smartphones, maybe writing apps can improve your skills as a programmer, but playing with the phone is not.

1) turn it off
2) set in on the papers you don't want to blow away.
3) get real work done/talk to people face-to-face.
