time estmation to learn swing

I have taken project on "Chess masters club" for my last year project...I have basic knowledge of swing(& very well in web applications)...Is it possible to learn swing in 6-7 months?

if your question is about learning Swing just for a Chess game, then Swing will be a very minor part of that game.
It will only display the board and the pieces. The pieces will be draggable, and there will be listeners attached to that.

the vast majority of the program will be in the game logic.

Yes, you should be able to become competent in Sswing in under 6 months. But, as Michael Dunn says, most of the logic for chess isn’t in the Swing.

Means major part of the code will be in core based??

That all depends what you mean by core. Isn’t Swing part of core Java?

then in which field of java I should be familiar with for this project!!(sorry if you found this question stupid)

For a final year project the most marks will go on the description which you write. You need to work out the logic behind playing chess first. That will require basic ordinary Java programming.

have a read (and search) of this site's 'Game Development' forum.

you should find several discussions/links on Chess.
