Hello friends,
I am an engineering student in 3rd year.
I wanted to know whether I should give SCJP 6 now or after graduation when I guess some new advancement in java will be out?

Hi Samarth, welcome to JavaRanch!

Take the exam (or sometimes, write it, or sit for it) is a more common way to say what you mean. I think you should take the exam whenever you think you can pass it. You'll probably want to start sending out resumes during your fourth year, and it would be nice if you could put that on it.

In English
Teachers give classes. Students take classes
Teachers give exams. Students take exams.

But, in Indian languages (Hindi atleast... I don't know about all of them)
Teachers give classes. Students take classes
Students give exams. Teachers take exams

The exam is seen as a culmination of the teaching process. Teachers give education to the student, and the students give back by doing their best in the exam. It makes more sense to me. The English language makes the student a passive part of the process (All they do is take take take) Hindi makes the student the primary actor in the exams(It's your responsibility to do well. You are giving the exam, and if don't do well, it's because you didn't give it well)

As for the actual question: There isn't much point in waiting for something new to come along. That always happens in the technology world, so you could wait forever. If you need the certification soon, then take the exam soon. But if you don't expect to need it for a couple of years, I don't see any reason to take the exam now.

That's interesting. So you give an exam like you'd give a performance? There's a certain logic to that. It sounds funny to me because if you consider the exam as a set of questions, possibly printed on paper, then the professor has to create the exam and give it to the student before anything else can happen. I guess it just depends what you're used to!

I think what Paul said is true.Technology is ever changing so waiting for something new wont be a bright thing to do.
And also having a SCJP certificate in resume would be helpful.
I think I'll take (or give) this exam as soon as I am prepared.

Thank you so much to all of you.
