Hadoop is a tool/framework/language. Like JDBC or JPA, it is good to know. You'll need to know many things in your career, so it is always good to learn.

Here is what Hadoop is?

1. Check you local advertisements to see how may companies are l seeking for this technology?
2. Do a bit of a research at http://www.google.com/trends/ to see its trend.
3. Check the industry specific forums like http://www.infoq.com/, http://java.dzone.com/, etc to see what the experts are saying.
4. Finally, now a days, there are so many so called Java developers. So, it really pays to have Java plus something, for example Java/JEE plus SOA or Java/JEE plus BPM, etc.
