how would get the camera to focus over a moving sprite?

hello there I am new to java and am still just doing basic tutorials so the answer to this at the moment is not urgent.
however i did a tutorial on zetcode http://www.zetcode.com/tutorials/javagamestutorial/movingsprites/ and was wandering whether there is an instruction for java to make the sprite focusable or whether you would have to make the background move and keep the sprite where it is.
hope that makes sense
i work nights and was hoping one day i can become an indie game maker and get out of working long shifts in a wetherspoons lol

anyway if anyone has any info on this it would be helpful thank you.
