set an antry path?

+Pie Number of slices to send: Send
Ok so I am as new as they get! ultra noob just started learning this stuff and I am trying to get this stuff working before I dive into any actual java Lessons.

So I have downloaded the SDK the API Documentation and have a text editor. ( Notepad++) ( Please recommend one better if you know one).

But it tells me "I need to set an entry to the path environment variable that points to the /bin directory inside the main java directory. so when I type (% javac ) at the command-line your terminal will know how to find the java compiler?"

I am reading "Head First java"and trying to make sure I get every step.

Thank you for your time and help.

If you have, your jdk installed in, for example, C:\Program Files\jdk-1.7, then you need to modify the PATH environment variable to include C:\Program Files\jdk-1.7\bin.

For more details, you can google for something like setting path variable. There may be an entry in this site's FAQ, but I'm too lazy to look. I think the "first cup o java" tutorial also covers it.

There are a number of freely available IDE's, you can google for a full list but 2 common ones for Java use are NetBeans and Eclipse.
You'll need to test them all to see which you prefer but I'd leave this until you are more accomplished at programming.

Welcome to the Ranch
You will find more about adding entries to your PATH here in our FAQ. Or in the Oracle instructions. They do differ slightly. I think you need a JAVA_HOME if you use NetBeans.
I would advise against using an IDE at this stage. Notepad++ is excellent. Set up automatic indentation, syntax highlighting, bracket matching and automatic conversion of tab to 4 spaces, and it will format your code better.
