I,ve read a couple of weeks ago that Spring itself is not able to manage XA transactions. Is that true ??

thats true. So you would need a j2ee container / some other product that implements XA.

...and the way it does that is via JTA transactions (although your application will typically not have any dependencies to the JTA interfaces).

Spring itself is not a transaction manager, however it does integrate with TMs via JTA. Essentially you get to define transaction declaratively and then decide whether they are local (JDBC, JMS) or distributed (XA).

Chapter 12 is dedicated to this topic and shows XA transactions in action with Oracle.
