I need opinion of indian software engineers.Which is a better option out of these two for an Indian Software Engineer working in a good MNC and desiring an onsite opportunity?

a) To continue working in your company as you are satisfied with work life there and then patiently wait for onsite opportunity. Keep doing good work and leave it to luck the break desired(onsite opportunity).Sooner or later it will arrive if you continue to do good work and keep updating your skills (and also some rare skills).

Or

b) Be ready to take the risk.Although you are happy with work life in your company, yet you desire onsite opportunity so just for for it.Apply in job portals monster,naukri.com e t c and just join any opportunity you get be it say 6 month onsite contract or so. After returning anyway you can join anywhere if you have good skills and profile. In life you got to take certain bit of risks too so why to play safe with option a) and be satisfied.

Thanks...

Why can't you pursue both options at the same time?

I think what Maneesh wants to say is stay with your current job and at the same time apply in job portals like naukri.com etc and if you get an opportunity from naukri.com grab it and in case you don't then you are still with your current job. Thus you are going for both option A and B.

First, let me clarify the below is my personal opinion only.
Only you can make a choice about your career..

I would suggest you be with option A. You are happy with your current work, and everything is fine, except the onsite opportunity..
You have a word with your current management and express your desire to go onsite and see what they say..
If you are so desperate to go onsite, search a job(but it should be permanent) which offers onsite, and about contract position for onsite, i would not recommend this, unless you are very confident about your skills and yourself, that you will earn a job as soon as you come back to India or you can manage your financial matters without a job for 2-3 months(may be more sometimes)...

P:S: Just a question, no intention to hurt you..
Why are you so desperate to go onsite? India not so bad..
Let me tell you, the other side of the grass always looks green, but always its not the case...

Your answer: India is quite good but all people who did engineering went abroad and everyone known friends and relatives think that if you being a software engineer do not go onsite then there is something lacking in your capability.

Well, Monica, you might want to ask yourself if it's good to manage your own career based solely on keeping up with your friends. Not once in all your posts about wanting to work abroad have you expressed any interest in experiencing the culture of whichever country you end up in, for example. All you seem to want is another tick-box on your CV.

Again, why are you so concerned with what friends and family think? Anyway, having worked with many onshored Indian developers in the UK, good and bad, I can assure you that there are some fundamental flaws in your friends' theory!

Hi Monica,

I've seen few posts by you about going onsite.
f
Here's what I think:
1) There are people who thinks that only talented people go to onsite and/or the corollary (the people who go to onsite are talented). There's a very high possibility that those people do not have (and/or do not want to have) real-life understanding of a project flow in an MNC IT company. Ergo, there's not much point in convincing those people. Breaking away your setup and trying something risky just so that you could convince those people? Absolutely not worth it.

2) Professionally, the only thing matters is - what you do in your job (and not where you do your job). So far, no interviewer has asked me about my onsites. All they were interested in was - what have I done in my job so far. To push this point further, if a candidate brings up the topic of onsite - the interviewer may get the feeling that the candidate here simply for onsite - and not for impressive job profile.

3) Of course, I'm not trying to convince why not to go onsite. All I'm saying is - going onsite need specific type of skills - e.g. very good communication skills, ability to work under pressure etc. If there are not much onsite opportunities in your project, you can try out other projects in your company. IMHO, in such cases, loyalty pays. Once you spend enough time in the company, and make a reputation, you can always put your demands.

Again, you can always think of onsite as your first opportunity, and switch the projects/jobs for it. Nothing wrong in it. Just don't settle for misconceptions like 'going onsite is only way to show capability' and so on.

Of course, i do want to go, but i am not desperate to go.
If opportunity comes along my work, i will go, even if i don't get any opportunity, i am more than happy staying in India..

If i upload resume in naukri, monster and specify International in the job preference, still i get calls only from bangalore gurgaon e t c.where as i want to go for change only in case of onsite job.so how to upload my resume and apply in such a way that only companies which can offer mei onsite job can approach me not others? can indian friends who have experience of applying on job portals answer this please.
