In the book I am reading it details different ways of supporting virtual hosting. It claims that for name-based virtual hosting the http 1.1 host header value is used, than the context. I never understood that the http host header value was really used for any thing, and that it was always the context which was used.
What is anyone else's experience?

Prior to HTTP 1.1, the virtual host was determined by the target IP address. HTTP1.1 added header support so that more than one virtual host could respond at the same IP address.
