I saw a tweet saying if I buy any SONY product over $100 using a 'synced' Amex card, I will get back $25.

I was planning to buy a SONY laptop anyways this holiday season. After seeing this promotion I went ahead and bought a vaio.
Amex credited me back $25.

I was wondering why would SONY or American express do it, though it is not a big money for both.
Is AMEX giving it back because I used their card or SONY is giving it back because I purchased their product (but why only for Amex customers).

There should be something in for both the parties here anyways.

Considering the very specific nature of the promotion, I would say it likely came from both companies -- and it likely came from marketing dollars (ie. the sales / retail teams is unlikely to lose commission).
