container-initiated dispatch doubt in servlet 3.0 specs and api-docs ?

in servlet 3.0 spec i have seen that at lot of places following lines have been used repeatedly.

"container-initiated dispatch duing which one of the ServletRequest#startAsync methods was called has returned".

what does exactly container-initiated dispatch means ? as far as my guess goes it means the service method. please help as this terminology is also in api-docs of methods dealing with servlet 3.0 .
