How to contribute to Database Work in an Open Source Project ?

+Pie Number of slices to send: Send
I want to sharpen my database skills. The books won't help much in that regard because all their examples are of the type hello world. To make matters more difficult, I don't think any company will give me even an unpaid intern with my basic SQL skills (I still many more skills to learn and go deeper into the ones i already "know"). So, I guessed that I could still improve my skills by contributing to an open source project.

Can you suggest how I can find such projects where people with basic DB skills can contribute ? I want to do only the DB work and may be a few small things here and there.

Thanks again !

Does it have to be open source? I would think you would learn more at this point by building a bigger database project from scratch by yourself. Or taking one of the free online courses on the topic. A lot deeper than "hello world."

I guess that open source contributions will be more valuable to potential employers. It will also be open to scrutiny which is good - because it will expose my flaws. The only downside is if I do something silly, it will be out in the open
