CAUTION: The following bit of news is not and will not be confirmed by anyone at Oracle Corporation. This is a friendly and completely unofficial heads-up to the JavaRanch community.

In the last week, Humphrey Sheil and I have finally worked through enough items to justify a Beta exam for the OCM Java EE 6 Architect certification. Whatever additional checks are required by Oracle's certification group are underway, and we should all soon see a formal announcement.

I'm here to say the objective exam will have substantially different material from the EE 5 version. Although there has is some pressure to recycle the items that remain pertinent to the certification, Humphrey and I have done quite a bit of reworking and inventing. The process started with multiple passes in revising the objectives of the exam and culminated with multiple reviews of each item to make them succinct, relevant and challenging.

Those of you interested in participating, I know nothing more about the release date or availability of the beta, only that the material is ready and we've been compensated and thanked for our time. We'll do some additional work after the beta to prepare the final version, of course, but then it's off to the races.

There has been some preliminary talk of providing an upgrade exam for those holding a prior certification. That's all it is right now: talk. No formal parameters, no established prerequisites, just acknowledgment there is a sizable market and potential interest for one and some interest in reaching out to it. FWIW, Humphrey and I both thought it was a good idea and contributed some thoughts to what would make it work.

That's the buzz. The next word I'll see on the matter is Oracle's announcement, same as you. Feel free to ask me for more information or who to contact at Oracle to find out more, but also expect that I won't or can't answer.

Currently,
1Z1-807 - Java Enterprise Edition 6 Enterprise Architect Certified Master Exam (Step 1 of 3) exam is available for registration on http://www.pearsonvue.com/oracle/ .
Does it mean that we already can take part 1 of OCMJEA6 ?

I notice the Advanced System Administration exam is also on the list, which I know for a fact is not yet released. I'd guess this list includes beta exams you can sign up for, after which they'll give you available dates to take it, but it's just a guess.

Hi Michael,

I have been waiting for the OCM Java EE 6 Architect certification to come out for some time now and I have just registered for the beta exam. I have numerous books on the OCM Java EE 5 Architect certification however I was wondering if you could provide some links to reference books or articles specifically for the EE 6 certification if there are any. Otherwise, perhaps could you provide some more information about the differences between the 2 exams and what topics can be expected from this exam.

TIA Craig

Well, there are a number of core references. As you may be aware, Oracle would like to see these exams take some of their cues from one or more of the courses they list as a prerequisite to taking the exam, whether you take all those courses or not. I don't have that list in front of me but it includes

Architect Enterprise Applications with Java EE
Java Design Patterns

there are other advertised courses that satisfy the exam requirement but are not as valuable, in my view, for exam prep

Java Design Patterns (which I wrote) takes most of its EE-oriented material from Adam Bien's Java EE Patterns and Kent Beck's Implementation Patterns. I'd read Bien's book carefully before plunging into this exam. Hint, hint.

The most helpful document, though, will be the exam objectives map. I don't know when Oracle plans to publish it of if they already have, but you really want to look that over before diving in.

Hope this helps,

Michael

Thanks Michael, Much appreciated.

@Kalpesh
Go to Pearson Vue oracle exams and click on proctored exams. You will be required to login to peason vue's website and from there you will be able to schedule an exam.
The beta exams are near the bottom of the list.

Till when is this beta exam available? Is there any advantage in giving only this exam and not the assignments/essay etc?

Michael,

Can you provide Amazon references for the 2 books you mentioned:

Architect Enterprise Applications with Java EE
Java Design Patterns

I have read Adam Bien's book but not the two you mentioned.

Amritendu

So if I just pass the 1Z1-807 exam then I will get the "Oracle Certified Master, Java EE 6 Enterprise Architect" certification(i.e. upgrade)?

No, you can take all three parts without completing Oracle training. You will be graded even (probably) on part 2 and 3.

You won't be assigned a title of certified Java Architect and won't be sent a paper certificate until you take some mandatory training.

MZ
