Porting OpenJDK to Windows (64 bit)

+Pie Number of slices to send: Send
I have started a port of OpenJDK to a Windows 64 environment, and am stumbling in a few places. Here are some questions (with observations) about this process.

1. When I started this project I expected that the web would have tons of information on this topic. However I find almost nothing, and less than that on 64 bit (instead of 32 bit) Windows. Does anyone have any thoughts on why this state of affairs exists? Related question: I have been unable to find a forum with recent posting activity on this topic; can someone make a recommendation?

2. The best instructions I can find are here: http://weblogs.java.net/blog/simonis/archive/2011/10/28/yaojowbi-yet-another-openjdk-windows-build-instruction, and here: http://hg.openjdk.java.net/jdk7/build/raw-file/tip/README-builds.html (this is the *official* guide to porting OpenJDK from Oracle). Both are slightly stale. For example there is a reference to the Summer 2004 build of DirectX (not on web anymore). Also both state that if you are using CygWin you must install the utility free.exe; however this is nowhere to be found on CygWin. Does anyone have more current instructions?

3. From the previous question: What kind of problem does the unavailability of free.exe portend as I get further into the port?

Thanks to everyone who posts a reply!
