Spring is such a broad framework encompassing so many things that this isn't a straightforward question to answer. If you plan on mostly using Spring for dependancy injection, then there really isn't much you need to know up front. On the other hand, if for example you want to use the Spring MVC framework, you should have a good grasp of Servlets and JSP, or if you plan to use Spring with Hibernate you should know some Hibernate, etc...
 
With a little knowledge, a cast iron skillet is non-stick and lasts a lifetime.
