I am watching the Oscars from a Hotel in Chicago. My wife is watching from home (New York City). We just noticed that there is a 10 second delay between us -- she saw the Jennifer Lawrence fall, before I saw it.

Why would they put a 10 second delay for Chicago? Weird.

Isn't it the Super Bowl thing? What if some celebrity suffered a "pants down"...

(Of course, new yorkers are cosmopolitan people who can cope with another Janet Jackson.)

It also could be local delivery through the hotel. I know at home, tvs watching the same thing on the same channel, in different rooms aren't synchronized. One room is a good 10 seconds behind another.

I've also noticed that using things like PVRs can cause delays. If i flip between OTA antenna and my PVR for the same channel, there can be a 3-4 second delay.

perhaps your hotel has to route the signal through several processing devices that slow it down?

I've watched football games and used Google Hangout to talk with my brothers in assorted places. Typically two of us will be 25 miles apart in the DC area, and one will be up in Philly, about 140 miles away. There is always a noticeable delay, 4 to 10 seconds, but its not always that same place that is ahead. Sometimes Philly will be first, others Philly is behind.

Back in ancient times, I'd listen to FM radio sound and watch TV of games. The radio guys were smarter than the TV announcers. But with all this digital stuff, the delays make it impossible to do.

an extra 1,860,000 miles of cable involved somewhere? (or I guess 1/3 of that?)

2/3 for "typical coaxial cable" according to Wikipedia, but it's a rare joke that touches on the dielectric constant!
