Welcome to the Ranch.

The OCPJP (1Z0-851) is for experienced Java programmers testing the syntax, API, OO concepts. The OCA (1Z0-850) is for junior programmers and managers testing OO concepts, Java SE API, Java EE tech, simple syntax, client/server tech.

OCPJP v5/v6 does not need OCA v5/v6.

No. In fact 1Z0-850 is not a pre-req for anything. It also doesn't exist for later versions of Java. Which means you consider the 850 as deprecated and not take it.

With Java 7/8, the OCA is a pre-req. It s a different type of associate exam and targets programmers. The old associate exam from Java 5/6 didn't target programmers. Confusing, right?
