Honestly, I'm not sure whether this is what I'm looking for.

I'd like to build a web service which will be accessible via:

  • a standalone Java application
  • via web
  • via Android/iOS

  • I just have no idea where to start. I know what I'd like the website itself to look like, but does anyone know how services like:

    wave
    or
    wordnik
    or
    tree.io

    are built?

I don't need anything complex at the very outset obviously, just need a working model and a way to understand how it all works. Perhaps something that would let me design an interface, submit user data, retrieve data from a database and display it.

A book recommendation would be nice.

    Thanks in advance.

Frankly, I'm not much aware of web services (or even not sure if those applications you've mentioned use web services).

For the starters, I'm moving your topic to Web Services forum.
